Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens.[a] He never changes or casts a shifting shadow. James 1:17
Yesterday was April Fools day. A day for pranking people, playing tricks and being fooled. But how did this all get started? According to most Folklorists, it originate in France during the 16th Century, when believe it or not New Year’s Day was on March 25. At that time New Year’s partying and exchanging gifts went an entire week until April 1. Then in 1582 the Gregorian Calendar moved New Year’s Day to January 1. Who knew?
Those who forgot or refused the change were called April Fool’s. Where the jokes and pranks came from no one really knows, although it may be to play a trick on those “fool’s”. How things change and yet we celebrate and do things and don’t even know why. Aren’t you glad that although the world is always changing and unsettled, there is One who never changes. And more importantly through His word we can learn why things work the way they do and that “there is a purpose for everything under heaven” Ecclesiastes 3:1-2. What a privilege it is to dig into God’s word and look for the hidden treasures that are there for us to find and better understand who God truly is and how He planned everything so we could live the abundant life Jesus died to give us.
