“Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!” Luke 2:14
This probably is one of the most quoted and familiar Scripture verse describing the Christmas story. These days peace seems to be something the world is looking for, but never seems to find. Our modern day definition is an absence of war or other hostilities; freedom of quarrels and disagreements. And although it’s accurate, it is also very limiting compared to the Hebrew meaning.
We know shalom as a greeting, but it goes way beyond that. Strong’s concordance defines it as completeness, wholeness, health, peace, welfare, safety, soundness, tranquility, prosperity, perfectness, fullness, rest, harmony, the absence of agitation or discord. This is the kind of peace Jesus talked about, that is why in John 14:27 He makes the statement that the kind of peace He gives is nothing like the world does. There is no way anyone or anything in this world can give that kind of peace.
Perhaps today you are looking for some peace in your life. Stop searching for the peace that is found in the things of this world and look to the Prince of Peace Himself this Christmas. He will be able to give you a peace that goes beyond our human understanding. His peace won’t keep you from experiencing circumstances that will try to steal your peace. But His peace will help keep you in the safety of His presence. Even when there is no reason to stay calm and joyful, you will find yourself resting on His promises and love. And there is no better or safer place than in His embrace.
