And the earth was tohu vavohu (without form and void); and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Ruach Elohim (Holy Spirit Creator) was hovering upon the face of the waters. Then Elohim said. . . Gen. 1:2-3a Orthodox Jewish Bible
I hear so many today talking about our world being in chaos with people being confused just wondering what will happen next to shake our security and not knowing where to turn or who to trust. Over and over I hear “I’ve never seen anything like this, what is going on?!” Well, the answer can be found in Genesis 1:2 and it itsn’t anything new.
When we use the original Hebrew to translate the Old Testament we see something very familiar; without form also means chaos and void of course means emptiness. So we can read it that the earth was in chaos, empty and full of darkness. The reason for this is explained in Revelation 12:9, where it states that God cast Satan and 1/3 of the angels to earth when he rose up in rebellion against God. Now think about it, the earth existed if they were cast here and the state of the earth was in chaos, empty and dark. Sound familiar? All those words people are using to describe the state of the world, full of chaos, people feeling empty and everything seems dark. But there is hope, just as there was when Satan roamed this earth as his kingdom.
The earth was without form and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. Then God said let there be light, Gen.1:3 and His light dispelled the darkness. And from that verse 3-31 tells us that God brought order into the chaos and purpose into the emptiness. Think about that, God brought all those things into being inspite of Satan and his demons reigning over the earth. Let me ask you a question? Why then are we so fearful of what Satan is doing in this world today? The same God who spoke light, order and purpose into being is still on the throne, and hard as Satan tries, the light can never be put out, God still brings order out of chaos and He has created all of us with purpose. As long as there are people who accept Jesus, that He came to die in our place so we could be forgiven of our sin, and recieve Him as their Savior and Lord and His Holy Spirit; His light will always shine through them to bring hope and purpose into the darkness.
Yes, everything does seem to be coming undone and spinning out of control. But as Jesus said, “in this world you will have trouble, but cheer up, for I have overcome the world!” Matthew 16:33.
