So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son. John 1:14
How many times have we heard those words, I understand from someone? Perhaps it was because we just shared a difficult time we were going through. Or maybe we’re seeking forgiveness from someone. Sometimes they are words of comfort at other times they fall flat, because the person certainly couldn’t know what you are going through.
But there is One who truly can understand whatever you are going through, His name is Jesus. Why can I say that? Because He became a man, and truth is He experienced everything we experience; the good, the bad, and the ugly. He felt the love and joy of friendship, the warmth of the sun, the taste of a good meal and rest after a long day. But He also felt physical pain and hurt, the longing to sleep, and rejection, betrayal and the temptation and pestering of the Devil.
This means when we pray in His Name we are talking with someone who knows what it feels like to, well, be us. What a relief to know that He is sitting at the right hand of the Father ever interceding for us (Romans 8:34). I don’t know about you, but there is just something comforting in knowing the person you’re talking to truly understands.
Too often when we think about “the Gift of Christmas” we only think about Jesus and Him coming to save us so we can go to heaven one day. But Jesus brought with Him many gifts, just like the one we are talking about today, understanding. He loves you, He understands you and what you are dealing with in life. After all Isaiah told us that God would send us a Wonderful Counselor.
