Let heaven fill your thoughts; don’t spend your time worrying about things down here. Colossians 3:2
Last night at Bible study we were talking about how to deal with unbelief when you believe. So the best scripture to study is the father in Mark 9 who cried out the best prayer ever, “I do believe, Lord help my unbelief! But to better understand where this poor father was coming from we have to go back to the beginning of this occurence.
Jesus came upon a scene we deal with all too often. His disciples and the religious leaders arguing. And He asked, “what are you arguing about?” Basically, the answer was, “this man brought his son for your disciples to have the demon cast our of him and they couldn’t.” And Jesus’ response in my version was “why are you having so much trouble trusting you have the power to have dominion over the enemy ? Bring him to me.” When he saw Jesus, he began to convulse. And asked, “how long has this been happening?” The father replied, “since childhood, and it’s tried to kill him. But if You can do anything, please help us.” Here’s where Jesus says, “If You can, all things are possible for those who believe.” and the father in turn cried out, “I do believe, help my unbelief!” Then when Jesus saw the crowd was coming their way, He cast the demon out and the boy was healed.
Maybe not in the exact same way, but this is what happens to us. The enemy wants to generate atmospheres of strife, anger and chaos, to distract us. This causes us to hear too many voices that contradict the voice of truth. Jesus had to refocus the father back on why he brought his son to the disciples and him in the first place, deliverence for his son and peace of heart for himself. He did believe, but all that was going on and the years of watching his son suffer had taken its toll on his belief.
He needed to flip his thoughts and begin to believe again what he knew about Jesus, that He was the Healer, Miracle Worker and He had compassion, and changed things. That no matter what he saw or heard around him, it didn’t change who Jesus was or what He did. How about you? It’s not a matter of “if” you’re going to be affected by what you see and what you hear. but “when”. But since we have the mind of Christ and He was the only one in the account who paid no attention to the things that were going on around Him; should we not think like Him? A mind that was always seeking the Father and His will. So the next time the enemy wants to palnt seeds of doubt, confusion, strife and upheaval, flip the thought and turn them towards Jesus.
