Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” John 20:26
Have you ever wondered why we worship on a Sunday instead of Saturday. The answer is found in today’s verse and the number eight. Eight days after the Resurrection was a Sunday, the second Sunday Jesus appeared and showed Himself to His disciples.
The number 8 is the number of new beginnings, life, a departure from the natural, limitations removed. Beginning a new way of worshipping the risen Lord, not on a Saturday, but on a Sunday the day He proved He has all authority, even over death. He entered the place where His disciples were without opening a door. Yet He was in their midst blessing them with His peace. All natural limitations were removed, it truly was a departure from the natural.
He went on to challenge Thomas to touch His hands and side so he could believe. But Thomas didn’t have to touch Him, just seeing His hands and side had him cry out, my Lord and my God. But the challenge then went a step further from both touching and seeing, to believing without seeing or touching. The true blessing comes when we can believe, because we trust in Who He is. So many of us think if only I could walk and talk with Jesus like the disciples. But this look again at what Jesus tells Thomas, the blessing is for those who take Him at His word, and that’s us!
