For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6
Every year Christmas comes and we get too busy with decorating for the “big day”, that we forget about what all the symbols of those decorations mean. Remembering not only helps us find a new appreciation for the decorations, but can also open a door for us to share with others what Christmas is all about.
We need to remember that many of the things we use for our holidays began as pagan traditions. The first Christians decided instead of making enemies of those who didn’t believe like them they would use those same symbols and attribute them to their true Creator, Jehovah God.
Lights and evergreens were used to remind people that even though they were in the dark of winter, spring would come again. It only made sense that since Isaiah reminded us that He is the Everlasting Father, an evergreen tree would be used. Why a tree, well the cross was made from a tree that would bring us our salvation. The very reason Jesus came into this world for. The lights remind us that when He was born He became the Light of the World. The balls remind us that His love is never ending.
The Holly and Poinsettia’s remind us of His sacrifice, the red his shed blood. The pointed holly leaves and the yellow stamen on the inside of the poinsettia remind us of the nails and it’s gold color, His royalty.
The gifts, well we often think about the three wisemen and their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. But honestly, the gifts are all about the first gift of Christmas Jesus Himself. How much God loves the world that He was willing to give His Son so that He could make a way to become our Father once again. This Christmas, don’t miss the true Gift and don’t forget to share Him with others.
