Remember your leaders who taught you the word of God. Think of all the good that has come from their lives, and follow the example of their faith. Hebrews 13:7 NLT
Yesterday we celebrated President’s Day. But today is the actual birthday of George Washington. He was an amazing man from accounts by other people. And one thing they all agreed upon, was that who he was, was because of his relationship with God that was forged by his mother. In his journal that he started when he was leaving home to begin his lifelong service to this great nation; he wrote the advice given him by his mother; “Remember that God is our only one trust. To Him I commend you. . .My son neglect not the duty of secret prayer.” And he truly listened to her.
Before he even left, he was in the daily practice of getting up at 4 a.m. and kneeling with his Bible open in prayer for an hour. Then repeated this scene again at 9 p.m. even when they had company. So taking his mother’s words to heart was no big step. This practice left many noteing that God had His hand upon him and protected him in many ways. They also told of his godly countenance to everyone, so much so that Henry Muhlenberg stated “he did not belong to this so-called world of society” because he treated everyone the same, no matter who you were or where you were from, with dignity, respect and kindness.
To say he trusted in Almighty God for every endeavor and living his daily life was an understatement. But he didn’t use that trust for himself alone, he extended it to this nation that was first beginning to come together. He made sure that everyone knew what he believed and where his wisdom and grace came from. Whether he was on the battle field, in encampments, participating in Congress or as a businessman and citizen, it was his desire to treat others with the heart of God. Today’s verse reminds us he is truly an example of a life to follow as he followed the Lord.
