Children, you belong to God, and you have defeated these enemies. God’s Spirit is in you and is more powerful than the one that is in the world. 1 John 4:4 CEV
On a Sunday morning my daughter says I pre-game by listening to other pastors on TBN. One week I was listening to the program Live With Passion with Father Cedric. He has been talking about the power of the Holy Spirit that is at work inside of us. He made one of the best analogies I have ever heard, and it got me thinking further and I want to share it and how it impressed me with you.
I think all of us will agree that life is hard. It has a way of beating us down and if it goes on too long we can begin to feel helpless and hopeless. It seems like we’re just a pawn being moved around on the chess board of life, a victim of whatever life has to bring. But the reality is that when we walk in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, we have the greatest power known to man living inside of us, His Holy Spirit. In addition to that, Ephesians 6:10-20 reminds us that we don’t really fight against flesh and blood, but powers and principalities of the air. God gives us a special arsenal to defend ourselves and one to fight with. Here’s the problem even though they are always at our disposal we just don’t utilize them to their full potential. And here’s where the analogy comes in.
Most of us have seen the movie The Wizard of Oz, or at least know the story line. Dorothy enters Oz by her house dropping on top of the Wicked Witch of the East, who has powerful Ruby Slippers. Glinda the Good Witch of the North comes to meet Dorothy and so does the other evil sister the Wicked Witch of the West who wants to know who killed her sister. Then Glinda reminds her of the Ruby Slippers, but when she goes to take them, they disappear and when she turns around, she finds they are on Dorothy. The Witch of the West very cunningly tells Dorothy they are no use to her because she doesn’t know how to use them. But Glinda whispers to Dorothy that they are very powerful, and then tells the Witch of the West to “be gone” because she has no power there.
Later she takes Dorothy to her castle and threatens to kill Toto unless she gives her the shoes, but when she tries to take them off, they zap her. Then she is reminded that unless Dorothy is dead the slippers will never come off. Can you see the analogy to Holy Spirit? The enemy knows our weaknesses and wants to use them against us to keep us captive and bound. But God gives us weapons to fight with to defeat the enemy. And His Holy Spirit empowers us to use them on a 24/7 basis. Once His Holy Spirit is in us, no one can take Him away from us and the only way He will leave us is when we no longer need Him in us because we will be with Him!
So why do we forget that we have the greatest power known to man living in us? Maybe it’s because we just don’t believe His Holy Spirit really is that powerful. Or perhaps we just haven’t learned how to use His abilities properly. Whatever the reason is, we are too often like Dorothy. She knew the shoes were powerful, Glinda told her and she even saw the power come out of them when the Wicked Witch tried to take them. Remember when Dorothy asks Glinda to help her get home? She tells her, you always had the power to go home. And when Dorothy asked why she didn’t tell her, she said she wouldn’t have believed it for she had to learn it for herself.
Do you believe through the Holy Spirit you have all the power you need to be a victor in life rather than a victim? Have you learned how to use the empowerment of Holy Spirit to its maximum power? Don’t be like Dorothy and have the power to overcome, but never use it. If you are ready to become an overcomer in life, then read your Bible asking Holy Spirit to show you things you never saw before, fellowship with other believers and talk with God daily.
