25 “That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are? 27 Can all your worries add a single moment to your life? Matthew 6:25-27
Most evenings around 6, the dogs and I go out for our final walk for the day. And every evening around 4, when at this time of year the Barn Swallows come out and bombard the one field that I no longer mow. The sunlight hits their wings as they swirl and dive for the bugs that the grasses and flowers attract. They aren’t working, they are enjoying gleaning the provision their Creator made available to them. They don’t worry or stress, they just know they’re provided for.
Yesterday was the first official day of Fall, the time of harvest, gathering in and enjoying the fruits of the planting season in Spring. We so often think about what we did to get the harvest and forget that the provision we’re experiencing and enjoying is actually from God. I mean think about it, we may till the ground and plant, but who made the ground and the seed. If the field is big enough who waters it? And even if we do water the garden who provided the water? See, as always all good things come back to Jesus who is our all in all. Like the hymn says, ” all I have needed, Your hand has provided, great is Your faithfulness, Lord unto me.”
So the next time you’re in the place of needing something only God can provide, like healing your broken heart or relationship. Restoration of health and peace of mind, and yes, even material and financial provision, and well, everything else, remember the last part of verse 26, “And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are?” The answer is a resounding yes!
