The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;
all who live it have insight.
His praise endures forever! Psalm 111:10 MEV
I know, you’re probably thinking, that’s not what the bible says, it says the fear of the Lord is the beginning. And that is true in our limited English. But in the Hebrew the word is Yirah and it means awe, respect, reverence, and worship. If you’re still not sure, Jesus Himself told us with His answer to Satan in the wilderness. Satan took Jesus to a high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and said he would give all of it to Jesus if He would only bow down to him. And Jesus answered, ‘You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him.’ A quote from Deuteronomy 6:13 You must fear the Lord your God and serve Him. In the Septuagint the Greek translation of the Hebrew is worship.
Truth is it’s a lot easier to worship the Lord when we have a healthy awe of who He truly is. He is like a beautiful perfectly cut diamond and because of the Light on the inside all the color hues can be seen and words seem inadequate to explain it. Personally every time I see or think about a baby my mind is blown considering this little gift began as an egg and a sperm. But the thought that leaves me speechless is thinking that God sent His Son for the specific purpose to save us. And the only way that could be accomplished was for Him to be brutally beaten and whipped, then hung on a cross until He gave up His life. Not just for good people, but for those who hated Him, knowing some wouldn’t ever accept His gift of love. I don’t think I’ll ever stop being in awe.
