When we were growing up my brother loved Evel Knievel, he even had a matchbox motorcycle replica with an Evel Knievel poseable figurine. And to be honest his stunts were pretty amazing and nerve wracking. He also lived a pretty dangerous life without the motorcycle, he was a a drunk, a womanizer and a gambler and had no time for God, but all or that changed.
One day he was standing on the beach and God showed up. As he explained the experience, he said he didn’t hear it from the outside, it was coming from inside of Him. God said, “Robert (his real name) I have saved you more times than you know. And now I want you to come to me through My Son Jesus.” He was stunned, he didn’t even know about Jesus, except that he used it as a curse word.
He didn’t know what to do, so he called the only Christian he knew, Sportscaster Frank Gifford. Frank was so taken back by what he heard, he told him to read Lee Strobel’s book A Case For Christ and that will explain it to you. So he read it and he had a dramatic encounter with God, and he was not just changed, he had a 180 degree transformation.
His testimony at his baptism was so impactful that the Pastor ripped up his sermon and said, “if anyone wants to accept Jesus please come up and 700 people were baptized that day. But it doesn’t stop there, for his remaining years, he was on fire for the Lord and is still pointing people to the cross for on his tombstone is etched, Believe in Jesus Christ. Look at the people Holy Spirit used to save innumerable people, a womanizer, drunk and gambler, adulterer and Atheist. Sounds like the Old Testament, but it is just God being Himself and showing that no one is too far from His reach all they have to do is respond to His call and their testimony will bring many others into the Kingdom. How awesome is our God!
