But Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart. Luke 2:19
Yesterday my Mom and I were discussing how it seems Christmas is coming upon us quickly and we’re running behind. I laughed and said we weren’t the only ones, I’ve heard from talking with several people they’re feeling the same way. And it’s tempting to throw up our hands and say what’s the point. But instead of not decorating for Christmas alone I’m decorating for winter. I mean, holly and evergreens are remind us Spring is coming. The extra lights are nice because it gets dark so early. And snowman, cardinals, lanterns and candles all remind us of the good things about winter.
So think about it. If we wouldn’t put up the lights, Jesus would still be the One who brought light into this dark world. And unlike Christmas lights, His Light will never go out! If there was no tree, wreath or evergreen garland, He still would be the giver of eternal life to those who accept His gift of salvation. If we never made another cookie, or turkey dinner He still is the Bread of Life that sustains us on a daily basis. If another Christmas ball was never hung again, the love of God would still go on without end. And if another gift was never bought, that would be ok because the greatest gift we were ever given was born over 2000 years ago.
So how important are all those symbols of Christmas? I think we hate to admit it, but the answer is not very. But they are very good reminders of what Christmas is truly about and where our focus should be. So if you’re falling behind like me and a lot of other people, take heart, relax, slow down and begin to enjoy all the reasons we celebrate Christmas in the first place, Jesus Christ and His love for us.
Let Him show you how to be the Light to others. See that He is the reason there is more than just this earthly life. That because of Him we will never have to hunger or thirst again to feel fulfilled and live a life of significance. All because He loved us so much He was willing to give His Son as a gift that would change our lives forever if we are willing to receive this amazing gift like no other.
So along with all the symbols we so greatly love at this time, let’s use this last week before Christmas to prepare our hearts for the Giver of all good gifts.
