Pride goes before destruction,
and haughtiness before a fall. Proverbs 16:18
The other day we were talking about something a lot of Christians have in common, road rage. Now most of those times it doesn’t end in acts of aggression, just ranting and raving in our vehicles. I remember the one day thinking that everyone on the road but me couldn’t or should I say shouldn’t drive. As I was getting off an exit, I just began laughing and said, “Lord, what is wrong with me!? Why am I like this? And then the answer I didn’t want to hear came.
It was clear as the cloudless day, “Because you’re prideful”. My first response wanted to be well I never. But it was Holy Spirit that pointed that out to me, so I stopped that thought. And also, because it was true. I know, all of us perfect drivers hate to admit it, but it happens because we’re all too often self-centered. And it’s not only with driving.
When everything and everyone is bothering us, we need to take a step back and have a moment with Holy Spirit. We need to ask Him to show us where the root of this is coming from. And if we take the time to stop and listen He will give us the answer and how to correct it. Then the ball is in our court and it’s up to us to put the ball back into play. Will we listen and act on what He has revealed to us or allow ourselves to continue letting whatever it is keep stealing our peace and joy?
Truth when we choose peace and joy over irritation and anger, we are looking pride and a haughty spirit in the eye and telling them to be gone. Simply because when we stay in peace and joy, it affects others positively, just like the pride and anger affect others negatively. So the next time you’re finding yourself being irritated at everyone around you, stop and remind yourself you need to share your joy and peace instead of thinking of yourself and show them Jesus.
