What Was and Yet To Come

The Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. ¹⁸ I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.  John 14:17-18

Jesus is speaking to His disciples at the Last Supper as He’s preparing them for His departure from this world. He reminds them that the world never accepted Him because they didn’t want to hear the truth. But His disciples did know Him and although He was leaving this earth, He would still be with them through Holy Spirit.

He reminds them that they are already familiar with Holy Spirit, because He has been been with them, empowering them to be able to heal and cast out demons. But then He also tells them what is yet to come. Holy Spirit wouldn’t be just with them like He was, but He would live within them, to be everywhere they would be 24/7/365. He would not just lead, guide and direct them physically, as Jesus did but from within through wisdom, and discernment.

How totally awesome is it that God planned for His Son to live within us carrying out His Word over 2000 years later in the same way His disciples experienced Him. He nor His power has not changed and now more than ever do we need to draw on and use Holy Spirits gifts and power to lead others to come to know Jesus as Savior and Lord. Oh how true that it is the goodness of God that leads people into repentance and coming to know Him as He truly is.
