And in a window sat a certain young man named Eutychus, who was sinking into a deep sleep. He was overcome by sleep; and as Paul continued speaking, he fell down from the third story and was taken up dead. Acts 20:9 NLT
This is a little talked about event that happened when Paul was preaching before his departure from Troas. Because he knew he wouldn’t see him again, they shared the Lord’s Supper and fellowship before he preached. The room was warm with flickering lamps for it was now dark. Eutychus was sitting in the window and was lulled to sleep and fell out the third story window! They rushed to him, but he was dead. Well that’s until Paul fell on him, embraced him and told them there was life in him. And they all went back upstairs, they shared Communion once again and fellowshipped until the morning, then Paul left. And Eutychus, well, he went home to his family who was relieved.
Every time I think of this story, I think about how so many Believers are like Eutychus when we read our Bibles, we get comfortable and lulled all too often by the familiarity of it. And before we know it, we can become dead to it. But praise God it wasn’t Paul who gave life back to Eutychus it was the resurrection power of Jesus through Holy Spirit. And that same Holy Spirit if we ask Him, will breath life back into us as we read the Scriptures that are alive and active! We will want to fellowship with other Believers to talk about them and share in Communion to remember all that Jesus accomplished for us at the cross and His resurrection. And then we will want to go out and tell others about the awesomeness of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and they too will find true happiness.
