He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.
And what does the Lord require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8
Watching the Olympics I saw medal winners accept their awards humbly. But in studying the word humbly in the Hebrew, the original definition of this word describes when the medal is won as a team. The Hebrew word is kana from where the word Canaan comes from which means merchants and traders, with its original meaning then gave the idea of surrendering all you own for a greater return; which then rendered the word as humbling yourselves before the Lord.
But consider the thought of surrendering all you own for a greater return and how it relates to what it means to walking humbly with our God. Just like the team sports in the Olympics, each individuals talents, gifts and abilities are given collectively so they could achieve a greater return than one individual could ever accomplish alone. And if any of them went out making it all about them, they would hinder the team as a whole. In the spiritual, we realize everything we are and everything we have is only because of God and in surrendering it back to Him can we use what He has given us for one common purpose, to make Jesus Christ known.
So what does it mean to walk humbly with our God, to know we can achieve great things together but only through His transforming power and enablement. Remembering, apart from Him we can do nothing, but with Him, nothing is impossible!
