Benaiah was the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man from Kabzeel, who had done many deeds. He had killed two lion-like heroes of Moab. He also had gone down and killed a lion in the midst of a pit on a snowy day. 2 Samuel 23:20 NKJV
Another day with unpredicted measurable snow I thought it was only fitting to have a devotion about snow. And there are more verses in the Bible about snow than you would think, Google it and you will see. But I picked today’s verse because it not only spoke to me about the snow, but life in general.
Jehoiada was one of David’s Might Warriors and he did many amazing exploits that people knew the Lord was with him, that’s how spectacular they were. How many of us have done things for the Lord that we never thought we could do or were equipped to do? A snowy day is a good day to look back on our lives and consider how we accomplished things that we ourselves said “it was God”.
Then I like how this translation says he killed two lion-like heroes of Moab. This one sentence is packed full of spiritual symmetry, lion-like, who else in Scripture is described “like a roaring lion”? And what happened to him at Calvary and the Resurrection? Jesus killed his power over everyone who has received His Holy Spirit in a place called Moab. The Moabites were the enemies of Israel and they were always taunting them. Isn’t that just like the enemy, he’s always after us in some way trying to destroy us any way he can. And where does he usually like to meet us? In the pit and that pit can be from looking around us and feeling hopeless, being angry at what we see and hear but we feel powerless over all the evil. It may be just feeling a dissatisfaction with life in general. And then to add insult to injury it’s a snowy day!
But what does this verse end with, he killed the lion in the pit! Keep that picture in your mind when you’re feeling there is no way out, or you feel hopeless, you have been given the power through Holy Spirit to kill that old devil who presents himself “like a roaring lion.”
