“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” Matthew 11:28-30 Msg.
Don’t you just love this verse? I believe there are very few of us who aren’t answering the first three questions with a loud YES! It feels so good to be heard and understood. But I love the three words after it even more, come to Me! It’s almost like I can see Jesus standing with His arms wide open, motioning with his hands as He’s lovingly saying, come here, you need a hug, a shoulder, a friend. Then He releases us from the hug, puts his arm around our shoulder as we begin to walk to a quiet place free from distractions.
While there, He reminds us that by keeping our mind on Him and all He is and has to offer us is the only true rest. When our minds are free of worry, fear, anxiety, pain and any of the other things that gnaw at us will our bodies also respond and relax. As we let go, we begin to be restored in every way and we feel refreshed and renewed. Although we have to leave and go back to our lives we can face whatever is before us because we’ve been renewed.
Oh the joy of experiencing His presence, knowing we are never alone. He is always there longing to lighten any weight this world has given us to carry. 2020 has been a year that we truly are beginning to see things more clearly and the foremost thing is how much we truly need the Lord in our lives. And more importantly how much He wants to be a part of our lives because He loves us so much! He truly is the only One who can make all things right.
