We need to be energetically at work for the One who sent me here, working while the sun shines. When night falls, the workday is over. John 9:4
Tonight we “Spring ahead” with the clocks and as excited as some people are to have “longer days” no one is happy about losing an hour of sleep. Truth is we still only have 24 hours in a day, and there is still the same hours of daylight during that time. All that happens is we have an hour more of light at the end of the daylight hours. But there are draw backs physically and emotionally, even if it’s not evident. The change in time messes with our Circadian Rhythm, our natural 24 hour internal clock that gives us a healthy sleep/wake cycle. In turn it also regulates other processes like hormones, digestion, body temperature and mood. Probably that’s why many people call Standard time God’s time.
But if we’re honest most of us, especially those who work inside, enjoy this extra end of the day light. We can actually leave work and have time to enjoy the sunshine and work or play outside. Now I know today’s verse, Jesus was talking about Him being the Light of the world. He would soon tell His disciples that as His time on earth was drawing near they and all future Believers would be the light in this world. And when the last Believers on earth will be raptured up to Him, then the darkness will once again be on the earth. So they needed to make the most of the time sharing the Gospel with others.
Let’s take heed of Jesus’ words and use this extra hour to be outside and sharing the light of Jesus with those we meet and spend extra time with. He literally is telling us to “work while the sun shines! For the night is coming.” Let’s pray for opportunities to meet others who don’t have a relationship with Jesus. Let’s step out of our comfort zone and talk with strangers as we’re on walks, playing golf, doing gardening, waiting for a bus or in line somewhere. Since we don’t know when Jesus is coming in the clouds, let’s get out there and use that extra hour of daylight to lead others into the Kingdom of Light.
