Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish. Eph 5:25-27
Have you ever been some place dusty and at first you don’t notice it, but as time goes by your skin begins to feel icky and you need to wash it off? And when you do, you feel clean all over? In our daily walk through this world, we pick up the dust and dirt that is around us. At first we may not notice it, but after a while we start noticing we’ve picked up some things we don’t like. Perhaps it’s losing patience while waiting for something, or someone says something offensive, hearing too many negative things, coarse language or rudeness. That’s when the Word can actually wash those things off of us.
As we read Scripture, they are changing our minds and cleansing our thoughts. They wash off the spots that we picked up, our souls and spirits are not only refreshed but often renewed and restored. We find ourselves taking Paul’s advice in Philippians 4:8 to think about the things that are good and worthy of praise. Think about the things that are true and honorable and right and pure and beautiful and respected. We’ll find our hearts and minds are at peace and rest, even though the world around us might be spinning out of control. God’s Word is amazing it can cut like a two-edged sword, and also bath us in cool water and gently cleanse us from all that is trying to hinder us. How awesome is our God!
