He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. 6 He was amazed at their lack of faith. Mark 6:5-6
How important is our focusing our faith on Jesus Himself? Today’s verse makes it very clear. Mark 6:1-6 tells us that after teaching, healing, calming a storm, casting demons into pigs and raising a girl from the dead, Jesus decided to head home to Nazareth.
There, He taught in the Synagogue on the Sabbath and the response from His “family, friends and neighbors” was less than accepting. As a matter of fact the bottom line was they were offended by the authority by which He taught . And it didn’t stop there, they began to question his heritage, where he got His wisdom and how it was possible that He could perform miracles. After all, wasn’t He the carpenter’s son?
And He gave them an amazing answer when He said, only in His own home town would a prophet be without honor. And He was amazed at their lack of faith. Here the word faith is apistia in the Greek, which means unbelief, want of trust and confidence; a state of unbelief. This is important because it show’s who their unbelief was in, not what. They didn’t believe who Jesus truly was and because of their unbelief in Him, then He could do not miracles, except to heal a few people.
It’s very easy to place our focus on what we want Jesus to do for us and wonder why we don’t see the results we wanted. But this passage makes it very clear that the miracles didn’t happen because they didn’t see Jesus as the Son of God. Let’s not make the same mistake the people of Nazareth did, let’s keep our eyes on Jesus Himself and all He is.
Transformation Thought: “The more you trust Jesus and keep your eyes focused on Him, the more life you’ll have. Trusting God brings life. Believing brings rest. So stop trying to figure everything out, and let God be God in your life.” – Joyce Meyer
