The blood on the houses where you are staying will be a distinguishing mark for you; when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No plague will be among you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt. Exodus 12:13 HCSB
Tonight at sundown Jews everywhere will be celebrating Passover and for the first time since the Passover in Egypt, people are asked to be in their homes. This is especially meaningful to Jews and Christians. For the Jews, it is a remembrance how God brought them out of slavery in Egypt and for His faithfulness to them. On that night God told them to stay in their houses and to sacrifice the lamb they had brought into their house. Now this is significance we often miss. A one year old lamb (how cute are they) were to be brought into the house for 4 days before it was to be slaughtered. This means, they fed it, loved it, made it a part of the family, then it had to be taken to the door threshold and killed. Imagine how difficult that was, the innocent lamb not only had to be killed, but then roasted and eaten and its blood had to be placed on the door posts of the house (making the shape of a cross). But there also was a significance for the Egyptians, because a lamb was one of their gods. So slaughtering it to Jehovah God was a great insult and would have infuriated them. They were to eat it, all dressed and ready to leave Egypt.
The blood on the doorposts then was the sign that when the Lord would see the blood, the plague of death would pass over that house. The blood was the mark that separated the Egyptians from the Israelites. This was the plague that broke Pharaoh and he let the Israelites go. Here’s the best part, none were feeble among them and they were given the treasures of the Egyptians, so that they could them build the Tabernacle.
The Passover meal was one of deliverance, healing and restoration. Today Believers all over the world will partake in Communion, which Jesus instituted at the Passover meal we call the Last Supper. He told us that He was now the Passover Lamb, and His body and blood also will bring deliverance, healing and restoration to those who believe in and receive Him as their Savior and make Him their Lord.
Tonight is an amazing opportunity to receive all that Communion offers us. As we remember what Jesus did for us as He said, “Do this in remembrance of Me.” So every time you eat the bread and drink from the cup, you are remembering I gave My life so you can be delivered from whatever has you in bondage, healed everywhere we hurt (physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually) and restored of everything the enemy has stolen. Then we can say with confidence, I am Forgiven, Redeemed, Restored and the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus!
