My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.
When can I go and meet with God? Psalm 42:2
Psalm 42-49, 84,85,87, 88 were all written by the Sons of Korah. Now what is so amazing about that? Well, Korah was the one who led the rebellion against Moses and Aaron, challenging their leadership and God for His decision to choose them. As you can imagine it did not end well for Korah, Dathan, Abiram and their families or the other 250 men that followed him. You can read about the entire event in Numbers 16.
Although it may seem like God was extreme in dealing with them, He also kept a remnant from Korah’s family, three sons Assir, Elkanah, and Abiasaph. Although Scripture doesn’t say why they were spared, God had a plan for them and out of that remnant, came the grandsons Heman, Asaph, and Ethan that wrote the Psalms and served king David as musicians and seers.
Beloved this is a beautiful story of the love, compassion, forgiveness and redemption of God. Korah sinned against God greatly, especially because he was a Levite who was set apart to serve God in a special way. But that wasn’t enough for him, he wanted more, he wanted to be the supreme leader. And adding to that he talked others into following him! Sound familiar? But God wanted to show once again that He ultimately overcomes all the plans of Satan. And he made a way for Korah’s descendants to redeem the family line and to serve the God given leadership the rest of their lives.
Today’s verse reminds us that even though as descendents of Korah they could have hidden in shame; instead, they rose up and wrote about how they longed to meet with God and worship Him. It is a wonderful reminder to us that no matter how many times we may feel we have disappointed God, or that He is mad at us, He isn’t! He longs to meet with us more than we want to meet with Him. Think about it, if the descendants of Korah believed they could meet with God under the Old Covenant, how much more can we boldly go into His throne room because of the New Covenant through Jesus! Never underestimate the love, mercy and grace of God for His children.
