His breath filled all things
with a living, breathing light—
5 A light that thrives in the depths of darkness,
blazes through murky bottoms.
It cannot and will not be quenched. John 1:4-5 VOICE
I love this translation, it is so descriptive, picture it the breath of God doesn’t just give life, that life produces a light. Jesus came as the Light of the world. And that light can reach into the deepest darkness and there is no place it can’t breakthrough. And beyond that it can never, ever be extinguished! Although the Greek word for light phos can either mean natural or spiritual light. However in Hebrew the word is or which expresses a connection between the natural and the supernatural or spiritual, to be more specific, it describes the divine connection of God to man. This light is the presence of God Himself in the person of Jesus and in us through His Holy Spirit. How illuminating is that?
Now I don’t know about you, during the winter, every time I see a light on a cold dark night, I sense a “welcome home” warmth, comfort and peace. Especially during Advent, every light I see reminds me that Jesus came to be the Light that penetrates everything and it can’t be stopped or put out no matter how the enemy tries to hinder and extinguish it. It also reminds me that before He left this earth, He reminded us that we are now His light to shine in this dark world until He comes to rapture us and “welcome” us home, where there is no need for the sun, because He is our light.
So I encourage you this Christmas to give people the gift of the light they are truly looking for. The light of the greatest love we ever will know, the redeeming love that comes from Grace itself, Jesus. When we let His light shine through us, people who are feeling lost, alone, hurting and weary will see the welcome sight of a light in the window of “home” on a cold, dark winters night and find their salvation in Jesus.
