Also work for the success of the city I have sent you to. Pray to the Lord for that city. If it succeeds, you too will enjoy success.” Jeremiah 29:7
I read an article the other day about how the Amish Vote turned Pennsylvania red, and to be hones I wasn’t surprised. You may ask why not when the Amish make great efforts to stay away from the modern world. And that is true, but they also believe in less government and that especially hit home on January 4 of this year when the Department of Agriculture raided Amos Miller’s Farm in Bird in Hand over unpasteurized milk and they didn’t stop there, they then started an investigation on the meat they sold.
They have been dealing with the Department of Agriculture on and off since 2016 and the raid was a defining moment, even though some still say it never happened. But what came out of the raid was the Amish Community in Lancaster came together to help out a neighbor. They knew if they didn’t stand together, the Miller Farm would be the first of many of government intrusions into their way of life. Typically only 10% of the Amish Community votes in any election. But this year was different, they knew they had to vote their voice and so approximately 180,000 Amish registered to vote.
The Amish weren’t just thinking of their Community, they saw government overreach as something that could happen to anyone if it happened to them. The Church can learn a great lesson from the Amish, sometimes you have to do what’s right even if it’s not your usual form of engagement. And the product of your act will not only benefit you, but also countless others. For way too long the Church has distanced itself from standing with those who are “outside our group” and this is a perfect example of what happens when we do, everyone succeeds and receives God’s blessing.
