Your word is a lamp
that gives light wherever I walk. Ps. 119:105 NCV
To many this is a familiar verse, yet most haven’t seen the depth and richness of this verse. In the Hebrew the word for lamp is Ner, which means source and container of light. Ohr means light, illumination or an agent that makes something visible. It also has a deeper meaning of bringing order into chaos. Now that really shows the difference between a lamp and light. So the bottom line is a lamp is an object that produces light and only serves its true purpose when it produces light.
Since God is light and there is no darkness in Him (1 John 1:5) and Jesus is the Light of the World (John 8:12) and the Word is God and the Word is with God and God became flesh and lived among us, then that light now lives within us! The Word is in us as a lamp and we need to bring it’s light to this world. We do that by learning from the Word, who God is and to see His heart, love, grace and mercy towards us. How faithful He is and how He longs to work through people to carry out His principles and ways.
We also can learn from the accounts and events that are in the Bible from the beginning to end. Instead of just “reading” an account, read it and start asking questions, like who were the main people, what can I learn from this. What did they do right, what did they do wrong, what were the consequences, how did God respond? The questions could go on and on. We can also find encouragement and be uplifted when we’re discouraged or depressed. Reading in the Psalms, “You are the glory and the Lifter of our heads” can pick anyone up out of the pit. They help us see who we are in Christ and how much He wants us to truly live.
That’s why before He left this earth Jesus told us that we are now the light of the world, not only to illuminate the Scriptures but help us bring order back into this chaotic world.
