They came near the town of Emmaus, and Jesus acted as if he were going farther. 29 But they begged him, “Stay with us, because it is late; it is almost night.” So he went in to stay with them. Luke 24:28-29 NCV
I haven’t written anything for a few days, because honestly, I didn’t know what to say. I’ve been reading thought provoking articles and listening to honest conversations between people who want to listen to one another and truly want to help things become better. But then as I was studying for our Wednesday night Call in Bible Study, Holy Spirit helped me see a parallel to today’s verses and how it applies to us today. Tomorrow I will share a story about how this has been played out in Houston Texas and it’s only the beginning.
All throughout Bible history, it speaks about Remnants, Lot, Noah, and small groups of faithful Israelites who God always used to restore His nation and keep His promises. These were the people who searched for God and desired His presence, they knew that following Him would bring deliverance, restoration and blessing. Just like the two followers of Jesus on the Road to Emmaus. One was named Cleopas and many Biblical scholars believe his companion was his wife since they are not named. As they were walking, Jesus met up with them. He asked them what they were talking about with such intensity. Cleopas told Him they were talking about Jesus’ death and burial. That this morning the woman went to the tomb and it was empty. So the disciples went to check it out, and the tomb was empty but Jesus wasn’t there. They were so consumed by everything that they had seen and heard over the past few days and what will happen, they didn’t even realize they were talking with Jesus! So Jesus began to talk about Himself through the Scriptures and how everything had to happen the way it did and help them remember that the Messiah would rise again.
Then as they came near Emmanus, I love what it says, “Jesus acted as if He were going father”. Did you see that, He acted as if He was going to keep going and leave them. But the next verse says, ” they begged Him to stay”, and He did! All He wanted them to do was seek more time with Him, to be with Him longer, to know more about Him and when they asked, He remained. Then as they were preparing to eat, Jesus took some bread, gave thanks, blessed it and broke it, and their eyes were opened and they saw Jesus, then He disappeared. In astonishment, they looked at one another and said to one another that they felt a burning inside as He talked about the Scriptures.
He wants the same thing from us today, although there are many Believers, there is a remnant that has a burning desire to seek Him and know Him better, to see revival come to the church and all people. To want to serve Him on a deeper level, to have a passion, a burning that needs to show Jesus to others. To help them find a relationship with Him so their lives can be transformed also to help transform our families, communities, states and nation. To help be the kind of change the world needs to experience the love, grace, mercy and forgiveness of God. To truly get to know Him through His Son Jesus. You may think this is only a dream, but Ephesians 3:20 reminds us that He works in us to help us achieve more than we could ever hope, dream of imagine. Things may look beyond hope right now, but with God all things are possible and He is looking for a remnant to do it through. Will you be one of the remnant that will help bring this much needed change?
