God, who first ordered ‘light to shine in darkness’, has flooded our hearts with his light. We now can enlighten men only because we can give them knowledge of the glory of God, as we see it in the face of Jesus Christ. 2 Corinthians 4:6 Phillips
Today is the shortest day of the year with only 8 hours and 46 minutes of daylight in the Northern Hemisphere. Anything North of the Arctic Circle will have 24 hours of darkness. Anything South of the Antarctic Circle will have 24 hours of daylight. Since the beginning of time light and darkness have been working against one another. But God spoke into that darkness and dispelled it by sending light. And when light stands next to darkness, light ALWAYS wins!
That’s why He sent the Light of the World His Son Jesus to dwell among us so that we would “see the light” and become the light through His Holy Spirit when we accept the best Christmas Gift ever, Jesus Himself! Our current sermon series reminds us that God created life to be lived in cycles and the seasons are one of them. Just like in nature where there is the cold “dark winter” that leads to the “glorious warmth” of Spring and Summer, it eventually ends with the coolness and “slow regression of fall”. And soon the cycle starts all over again. So too our personal lives are the same way. We go through seasons that are cold and dark and without the promise of Spring coming there would be no hope. But since we know Spring always follows winter, we too know that our trials and troubles only last for a season too.
Tonight as the darkness falls I encourage you to embrace that darkness and the beauty it brings. The settling and quiet, the hope of light in the stars and the moon that reflects the light of the sun. And the darker the night, the brighter the moon and the stars. Then think about embracing times of trouble and crisis, knowing that the Light of the Son that was given to us shines brighter at those times. Seek the face of our beautiful Savior whether it be dark or light and know He is with you bringing you through one season and into another that will burst forth with life.
