All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4
Every time I see or hear something about the aftermath of hurricane Melissa I think of this verse. Then I think those of us who have never gone through a trauma like a Category 5 Hurricane have no idea what they are going through. So how can we possibly give them comfort?
But actually we can, because today’s passage says that God comforts us in troubles. Our troubles may seem small in comparison to those in Melissa’s path, but when we were going through them, we needed and received Jesus comforting us. He knew what was causing us the most anxiety, stress and pain and addressed them in a way that bought peace and healing even in the most devastating circumstances. Now we might not be able to go there in person. But we can pray for those in the hurricane’s path as we would pray if we were in the same situation asking God to comfort them as He would comfort us. And because He is a God of mercy and grace we know He will. So let’s pray that God will send people to these Islands that minister to them and show them the love of Jesus.
