Make me understand the way of Your precepts;
So shall I meditate on Your wonderful works. Psalm 119:27
Memorization places God’s Word in your head and meditation plants it in your heart. We understand the Word with our heads, but when they get planted in our hearts they become a part of us and how we live our lives.
Meditation on the word has often been compared to a cow chewing its cud. They chew on their food until it has been broken down. then they swallow it to go into the first of their four stomachs for further processing, then to the next so all the nutrients are process until all the nutrients are removed and so on until the process is completed. So it is when we meditate on the word. When we go over a verse or part of a verse many times in different ways, God can reveal to us the deeper meanings.
For example, we can take Psalm 23 and break it down. We say “the Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.” We can say the Lord being our shepherd, and repeat it with the emphasis on different words. Then meditate on the Lord being our shepherd, what does that mean? A shepherd protects and cares for his sheep, that’s why they have no want. Then you say it again, but think about other ways a shepherd takes care of the sheep meeting their wants so they won’t have any lack.
As you do this, the truths will be planted in your heart and grow deep roots, so that you will be able withstand no matter what life hands you, the good as you give thanksgiving, the bad, as you you are encouraged and given hope, and even the ugly, when you need to know he will never leave nor forsake you and you are never alone. Perhaps we all can become more disciplined in the meditating on the word because it is truly life giving in all things.
