“I also tell you this: If two of you agree here on earth concerning anything you ask, my Father in heaven will do it for you. Matthew 18:19
This is a powerful verse and teaches us so many lessons. The importance of prayer, that God is our Father, that we can ask Him for anything, that he loves to give to His children, His trustworthiness and the power of two believers. But we fail to truly understand what it means to agree and the truth is it can be a humbling experience.
The Greek word for agreement is Symphoneo, it means to sound together, to be in unison, be in accord; trop. to agree with, accord with in purport,; to harmonize with, suit with; to agree with, make an agreement. Notice there are two musical terms used, symphony and harmony. When a group of musicians play together they sometimes play in unison the same note. But what makes the amazing sound is when they are play different notes, that work together well, they harmonize. But one still plays the melody. So it is when two people agree here on earth in prayer. When two people come together to pray for something, sometimes they although they are praying for the same thing, the way they want the prayer to be answered may be different.
For example, someone may be praying for healing and wants someone else to pray with them. The person with the request wants healing and believes it will come through surgery. The person who they are asking believes that God will heal them without surgery, just by prayer and believing. Although they are praying for healing, they are not in harmony, because they are believing for different methods of the healing. To be in agreement, the person who believes in healing through prayer needs to change their prayer to healing through surgery. They can pray for God to prepare their body for surgery, for wisdom and skill for the surgeon and nursing staff, for a good recovery and exponential healing. Harmonizing with a fellow Believer is a beautiful thing because it means one is willing to change their mind so that God will honor their prayers. It is a true expression of love when one is willing to Yield to another for the sake of the other. Would you be willing to yield?
