I will meditate on Your precepts
and keep my eyes on Your ways. Psalm 119:15 MEV
I was reading an article the other day that said the average attention span of an adult is 8.25 seconds! Now that may seem shocking to you, but it should make us sad, because the average attention span of a goldfish is 9 seconds! At this point you may be asking yourself, “How did we get here?” And then the second question should be, “What are we going to do about it?”
How we got here has been happening over an extended period of time as things have become more and more technical. We live in an immediate gratification world and it has taken its toll on all of us without us even noticing. We get impatient at fast food restaurants, we say hurry up to our microwaves and well, if the internet is a bit slow, we yell at our computers or phones. It even has spilled over into our spiritual lives, we want Instagram sermons, short daily devotions and 1 1/2 hour church services.
But as I read further with the article, a ray of hope shone forth, those who practice mediation produces a 20 minute attention span. Granted it’s any kind of meditation, so how much more must our attention increase when we’re meditating on God’s Word, the Author and Creator of our minds! It puts an entirely new perspective on the command God gave Joshua to meditate on His Word day and night. I don’t know about you, but I not only want my attention span to increase, but for it to grow in the wisdom and knowledge of the Lord. It’s not just the amount of meditation, but what you are meditating on, and there is nothing better than Word of God the Author and Finisher of our Faith!
