And everyone who was in distress, everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was discontented gathered to him. So he became captain over them. And there were about four hundred men with him. 1 Samuel 22;2
In 1 Samuel 21, David was running away from King Saul. When he was trying to hide his identity her ran to King Achish of Gath to escape Saul. But one of his servants recognized David, so out of fear he pretended to be crazy. So thinking he was a madman, Achish told him to leave. Upon leaving he ran to the Cave of Adullam, and thereabout 400 men who were distressed, in debt and discontented came to be with him.
On top of being chased by Saul, David was also carrying the guilt of the death of the Priest’s and their families at Saul’s command because they tried to help David. When we focus on all our problems or the chaos that is happening all around us we too feel like running to a cave to hide. But like David, we should then make that time away from it all productive by focusing on Jesus. David wrote one of the most heartfelt Psalms that people often turn to today when the going gets tough, Psalm 34 and I encourage you to read it.
He praises the Lord, he cries out to Him and the Lord answers, then he tells again the goodness of God and how He delivers those who call on Him. And this goes on for 22 verses! This is a great Psalm to read anytime to either get you through or to prepare for when you’re distressed, discontented, in debt, need healing or anything else. Read it and know that God truly cares and hears you when you call and will answer you.
