When Jesus had tasted it, he said, “It is finished!” Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. John 19:30
The crowd that only a few days ago was singing and shouting His praises are now calling for His crucifixion, This was the day of total sacrifice from the early morning illegal trial directly to the Praetorium to be mocked, beaten and given a crown of thorns forced down on His head. To the whipping post, where He was whipped so brutally that in the Greek it doesn’t say stripes, but stripe, meaning that there was no flesh left on His back, it was considered one stipe. Because the whip wrapped around His body it also ripped His chest and stomach that His major organs were exposed.
He then was made to carry His own cross ntil He stumbled and they got Simon of Cyrene from the crowd to carry it for Him. Once at Golgotha He crawled onto the cross and allowed them to nail Him to it. By all accounts of modern day forensic scientists He should not have been alive, but He was, but He did it for you and for me so He could save us.
From the drops of blood from His brow as He prayed in the Garden and the crown of thorns, He broke the anxiety, worry, fear and stress from our minds. From the ripping of His flesh and trauma on His entire body, He purchased our healing and from the shedding of His blood He broke the power of sin over us. And yet at this point the disciples still weren’t understanding this message in the Communion He instituted when He said “do this in remembrance of me.”
Taking on and becoming sin Himself, He experienced separation from His Father to make the way for us to be reconciled back into a relationship with God the Father and to be called His children once again. And when He knew He had accomplished this He bowed His head in reverence to His Father and He gave up to God His Spirit. He was then prepared to be buried in a borrowed tomb.
Scripture Reading: John 19
Something to consider: Jesus literally paid it all for us. His perfect sacrifice satisfied the wrath of God that sin had caused. Now those who accept His sacrifice are reunited with God as Father. Consider how much you are loved and everything He saved you from this day.
