‘Who are you, O great mountain?
Before Zerubbabel you shall become a plain!
And he shall bring forth the capstone
With shouts of “Grace, grace to it!” ’ ” Zechariah 4:7
Grace, what a multifaceted word. The Cambridge Dictionary defines it as: a quality of moving in a smooth, attractive way, the quality of being polite and pleasant, the prayer of thanks to God before a meal, approval or kindness, especially (in the Christian religion) freely given to all humans, through the kindness or help of God. Note the clarification of “in the Christian religion”, probably because Christians boldly say, grace is God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense. But a shallow definition like that makes a verse like today’s in Zachariah 4 asking, what’s grace got to do with it? And what does that have to do with anything today?
The answer is everything! Consider the first sentence talking about a mountain. In Scripture a mountain always refers to some insurmountable obstacle or hindrance standing in our way. But notice it’s asking a question, just who do you think you are? It’s a challenge and warning to this mountain, you’re on your way out. So are you facing any mountains in your life? It could be relational, financial, a health issue, etc.
Zerubbabel was the governor, the grandson of King Jeconiah, who led the first group of captives out of Babylon. He was an Old Testament picture of Jesus who came to set the captives free (Luke 4:18) and to disarm the enemy of his power and authority and make a spectacle of him. Colossians 2:15). Jesus leveled the opposition for us. Jesus Himself is our Cornerstone our sure foundation on whom our lives are built (Eph. 2:19-22).
So we can shout Grace! Grace! Because it’s nothing of us, we can only live a victorious life because what Jesus accomplished for us. All because He Himself is our Grace, our unmerited favor. Declare Jesus and all He is over your problems, your troubles, the things that seem insurmountable and watch them become a plain that you will walk over in victory!
By the way, today is a great day to begin declaring Jesus our grace over your life, the fifth day of January, the Biblical number of 5 meaning grace.
