“God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars.” – Genesis 1:16
Today at 12:49 pm is when the moon officially becomes this year’s Harvest Moon and will last for three full days! When the moon rises very soon after the sun sets, it results in an abundance of bright moonlight early in the evening. Now this was very helpful to farmers who were harvesting their crops before there were lights on tractors. However, it is still very helpful because it lights up everything it touches. During full moons I often find myself checking if I’ve left a porch light on.
At that point I find myself fixed on how beautiful and luminescent it is. It’s a peaceful, graceful light, one that helps you see without blinding you. It reminds me of the way Holy Spirit can show us our blind spots when we choose to ask Him to show us. We are so clueless about some things we say and do, simply because they have become a part of us. I remember how people used to tell me things about myself that I didn’t like to hear and I just would brush them off thinking it was them.
But then one day as I was scolding my 3 year old daughter, somehow God had me see myself through her eyes and heard what she was hearing. I was horrified I remember grabbing and hugging her while crying that I was so sorry and to please forgive me. I might have brushed others off, but I couldn’t with God. He put a light on me, not a bright one I turned and squinted from, but one that illuminated what I needed to see. After that day from time to time I ask Holy Spirit to “moonlight” my blind spots. The ones I don’t want to see but need to so I can ask Him to help me repent from them.
I ask for repentance because that word in the Greek metanoia means to change one’s mind and in so doing it transforms my heart and also changes my behavior. None of us will ever stop needing those repentance times until we meet Jesus face to face either in death or in the Rapture. Until then, I will keep looking for those full moons that help remind me to get a Holy Spirit “moonlight” check up. What a beautiful way to be changed from glory to glory.
