The Lord is my shepherd;
I have all that I need. Psalm 23:1
I heard Psalm 23 today and a little talk about the care our Shepherd has for us. And I had to smile as I thought about what my mentor and spiritual father said to me on the day he ordained me. He looked me in the eye and said in his southern drawl, “Colette, just remember you may be a shepherd from the back, but you’re still a sheep from the front.”
And I have learned how true that is. In order to be a shepherd after God’s heart, you need to remember first you’re His sheep. It’s difficult to lead a flock when you forget how to follow the Chief Shepherd. All of God’s blood bought children need to take time now and again to remember how much He loves us. With Him as our Abba (Daddy God), we truly have everything we need. And first and foremost to know His voice and to listen and follow. He’s always ready to protect us and keep us safe.
But even when we go astray, He will come find us and carry us home if need be and comforts us. If we become wounded in our wandering, He anoints us with oil and helps us heal. When we go through a crisis or trouble, we’re not going through it alone, He is with you. He is always there to listen to what’s on our minds and hearts reminding us He will never leave of forsake us. Yes, He truly is everything we need.
