Assuredly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her.” Mark 14:9
We often don’t think about it, but Jesus didn’t just have disciples, He had friends. Scripture tells us three of those friends were Lazarus, Mary and Martha. He loved all of them, and they loved Him. But Mary had a special friendship with Him. She saw something different in Him and she wanted to get to know Him better.
One day as He was visiting the family, Martha began to busy herself with making Him feel welcome by “doing “ for Him and in doing that she was totally forgetting about Him. But Mary on the other hand just wanted to spend time with Him and truly visit and grow in their friendship. To which Martha responded indignantly to both Mary, why aren’t you helping me? And to Jesus, why aren’t you telling her to help me! Jesus surprised Martha by saying Mary was doing the right thing by sitting at His feet. Mary didn’t know it then, but she was being prepared to better understand the resurrection of her brother.
This understanding in turn would ultimately prepare her for anointing Jesus before He entered into Jerusalem for the days before His crucifixion. Although some chastised her for her extravagant act of anointing her friend with the expensive oil, Jesus saw it much differently. He said what she did will be a memorial to her. Why? Because she had taken the time to truly get to know Him and His heart for her. She was one person who truly understood when He spoke of His death and resurrection and how it was going to change everything. And that revelation began while she was sitting at His feet.
Transformation Thought: Sitting at the feet of Jesus will take us to the Most High place where He can reveal Himself to us.
