Then he took a loaf of bread; and when he had thanked God for it, he broke it apart and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, given for you. Eat it in remembrance of me.” Luke 22:19
As a person who loves history, I have to admit I was a bit dsmayed at myself yesterday for not remembering D-Day. The generation that lived through WWII with all the hardships, loss, joy and victories it held become less and less every year. The memory of those who sacrificed their today’s so the world could have a tomorrow are becoming faded. Freedom for all people that was the battle cry is being challenged more and more all over the world once again. And perhaps that’s why instead of being a day of remembering with grateful and thankful hearts, that men of the Allied Forces fought against the evils of tyranny, dictatorships and destruction that would lead to the end of WWII, was relegated to maybe a passing thought.
Because of what they did that day, at great loss of life, we can truly live. Maybe not perfect lives without any issues, but free to make choices that we take for granted every day. How good it is to remember the events of the passt sometimes, so we can remember to appreciate it helped give us the things we enjoy today. And it reminded me of how important it is to remember everything Jesus accomplished for us in His life, death and resurrection so long ago so that we can enjoy true life here today, not just waiting until we get to heaven.
We need to stop just “taking” Communion at church, which has become a “tradition” of the church and go back to the daily practices of the church that was established 50 days after Jesus rose from the dead. And that is to partake in sharing and remembering His victory with Communion daily as according to Acts 2:46 in the Temple Courts and from house to house. This daily practice kept their minds and eyes focused on the victory Jesus won at the cross over everything that was destructive. They found hope, joy, peace, strength and freedom even in the midst of troubles. Let’s once again begin to remember ALL that Jesus accomplished for us daily and once again learn to appreciate them so we can tell others of His great love, grace, mercy and forgiveness.
