As the deer longs for streams of water,
so I long for you, O God. Psalm 42:1
Last evening I finished mowing the grass and was enjoying the soft breeze that was a welcome relief from the heat and humidity we’ve been experiencing. I came into the house and as I got myself a drink of water, I saw something move by the cornfield. There was a beautiful sight a deer, bathed in the soft light of the setting sun. It seemed like there was a spotlight on it. As I watched it respond to sounds including Sam barking, then resume eating, I thought of this verse and the song that was so popular back in 1984.
As I sang the song the words became so powerful. As the deer panteth for the water, so my soul longs after Thee. After all these months of upheavel, confusion and chaos, how we are longing for a time of refreshment. Unfortunately when we look around us there seems to be no relief to be found. Just like a deer wandering looking for cool water to refresh it. Our souls, mind, will and emotions have become parched beyond anything we have ever known and yet today’s verse tells us where that refreshment may be found. Our soul longs to commune with the One who created us and longs to have a relationship with us.
It’s the weekend, take some time over the next two days to spend some time in God’s presence. Not asking for anything, or even wanting to talk with Him, but to just drink in the refreshment of the peace and quiet that is found in being with Him. Listen to worship music, or read a Psalm or two and rest from the chaos of the world around us. Be still and know He is God, and He loves you so much He was willing to give His Son so that you could have the ability to sit at His feet in the throne room of grace. He longs to refresh your soul, and if we are honest we want to be refreshed by Him too.
