He determines the number of the stars
and calls them each by name. Psalm 147:4
Last year I heard a sermon about how before the written Word the Contellations told The Story of God’s Love and Grace. In the Book of Job 38:31-32 they are called Massaroth which means to be apportioned or separated. The Massaroth is comprised of the 12 main Constellations of what we now call the Zodiac which comes from the Greek zodiakos which means moving in cycle or circle. They have even found an ancient floor mosiac of the Massaroth in the floor of an ancient Gallilean synogouge. Constellations are known as far back as the earliest civilizations, and the Zodiac has been found in every ancient culture.
But as with anything God creates, Satan distorts and perverts its original purpose. As with astrology, many scholars believe that at the time of the Tower of Babel, man began to use the constellations to mean something quite different. Instead of God’s plan for the ages, Satan turned it into prophecies (predictions) for individuals, once again focusing on self. The Greek’s especially changed even the characters and order of the constellations to what we know today and its horoscopes.
In today’s verse the word “number” in Hebrew is Saphar which actually translates to tell the story, to declare. Also, that God himself named each and every star, which in just our Galaxy alone are over 400 Billion of them. In God’s original order the story begins with Virgo, the Virgin and ends with Leo, the Lion of the Tribe of Judah.
It is my hope that as we look to the stars to see the glory of God, this year you will look at Christmas with more awe and wonder than you ever have before. That you would truly see that if God created the stars with the purpose to declare His glory, how much more of a purpose does He have for you to show His glory to the world. Just as stars tell His story by shining their light, so Jesus called us to be lights to this dark world so everyone can see His story of Redeeming Love.
