Enjoy the Lord,
and he will give what your heart asks. Psalm 37:4
Tomorrow people will go to church for different reasons, some are searching, some are looking for answers, some for peace and comfort and some to sing worshipsongs and hear a sermon. And for many that’s the beginning and end and leave the same way they came in. Have you ever asked yourself why you really go to church and actually gave an honest answer, not one you think you’re supposed to say.
Be honest, most of us go to church for us. To be encouraged and uplifted, to talk with others about our problems and issues, to be blessed. But look at what today’s verse says, we are to “enjoy the Lord.” When was the last time you did that? Too many times our relationship is reduced to a onesided one, about what He can do for us, very little if any about what we can do for Him. And since God pretty much doesn’t need our help with anything, then there’s only one thing we can give Him; and that is our undivided attention and love.
We need to remember we were created in His image and His desires for us to become more like Him through the example of His Son Jesus. The main reason we were even created was that He wanted to have a family with deep close relationships. Now I don’t know about you, but although I appreciate when my daughter does things for me, or gives me gifts, the most precious thing to me is when she makes time in her busy schedule to give me her undivided attention. When we have close friendships, there is nothing like spending time with them. And if it’s a spouse, well, those uninterrupted, peaceful times devoted to just listening to one another is better than anything. So tell me why would our Abba Father want anything less from us.
The Greek word for worship means to come close and kiss. So perhaps when we get up tomorrow morning to get ready for worship we should consider Abba Father and His Son are waiting for us to commune with them in a close intimate time of enjoying one anothers company. To truly worship to bless the Father and Son through the Holy Spirit and leave blessed knowing we have truly been with the Lord.
