When Jesus had tasted it, he said, “It is finished!” Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. John 19:30
Today between the hours of 9 AM and 3 PM Jesus was nailed and hung on the cross. After enduring hours of being beaten, His beard pulled out, spit upon, whipped with a cat of nine tails which ripped his flesh to shreds and having a crown of thorns pushed onto His head the final affliction was death on a cross.
He hung there suspended between heaven and earth for six grueling hours where he faced ridicule and slander, yet the only words He said were of comfort, peace and love even for those who carried out the prophecies of His torture and death. The pain was excruciating and humiliation was intense but the most difficult part was when He cried out “My God, my God, why have You forsaken Me?” Because it meant His Father had forsaken (turned His heart away) from Him.
But in the midst of everything, Jesus showed His authority, dominion and respect for His Father and the purpose He was sent to this earth. In His last minutes on earth, He said “It is finished” and then it says, He bowed His head in humble respect and love for His Father bowed His head and then gave up His Spirit. Now most people take their last breath and then their head bows. But Jesus intentionally bowed His head and then died. What power, meekness and majesty! O what a Savior!
