Pray passionately in the Spirit, as you constantly intercede with every form of prayer at all times. Pray the blessings of God upon all his believers. Ephesians 6:18b TPT
The Greek word for pray in this verse is proseuchomai, pro meaning to face, towards and euchomai meaning to speak out, utter a wish, utter aloud. Basically it is prayer towards God which carries a notion of worship. It encompasses every type of prayer submission, confession, petition, supplication, intercession, praise and thanksgiving. That’s why we should desire to pray in the Spirit so He can pray for us, for He knows exactly what to pray for.
Praying in the Spirit can be quite controvesial, because it usually involves speaking in tongues as a prayer language, not the spiritual gift which is for interpretation. So what exactly does that mean, and who is it for? According to Scripture, this verse and Romans 8:26-27 tells us that all those who have received Jesus as their Savior has the ability to pray through Holy Spirit. However, not everyone ustilizes that ability knowingly. Romans 8:26 says Holy Spirit helps us pray with groanings that cannot be expressed in words, but God knows what Holy Spirit is saying. I know personallywhen I first began and when I’ve prayed with others who have been in great distress, they have groaned or “babled”, and I truly believe God knew what was being said, it was truly a language of the heart. If when you are praying earnestly for something and this happens, embrace it, let it happen. This is nothing to fear or feel strange when it occurs, it’s an amazing thing, because the enemy cannot understand it, so it’s just between you and God. How awesome is it to voice the desires, cares, burdens and anxiety of our hearts and not have the enemy intercept it.
Praying in the Spirit is very powerful when we pray for others, especially our families. Many times we are praying prayers of protection, favor and direction over the lives of those we love and care for. With Holy Spirit’s help we can even pray for things we don’t know about, but He does. Many people have given accounts that they were led to pray for someone at a specific time, even though they didn’t know what they were praying for. Only to find out it saved them from an accident, or made a decision that kept them from financial harm or they were led to help someone else. When we choose to allow Holy Spirit to take over our prayers we will see the impossible happen.
