And the Lord said to Joshua, “Do not fear them, for I have delivered them into your hand; not a man of them shall stand before you.” Joshua 10:8
The other morning as I was out for my walk, I stood in the field and looked up into the cloudless sky. There to my right, was the sun and directly to my left was the moon and I immediately thought about the account where the Israelites were in a fight against five Amorite Kings. The Lord gave them strength to march all night and then He roused the enemy and drove them right into the Israelites. They slaughtered many of them and those who fled down a pass to get away, God sent hailstones and more of them were killed by the hailstones than in the battle.
But the five kings and more of their armies were fleeing and Joshua knew he needed more time to defeat them. So he looked to the skies and said “Sun, stand still over Gibeon; And Moon, in the Valley of Aijalon.” And it did for almost a day. But to me here’s the amazing thing, now we know the sun already is still, but God heard the cry of Joshua’s heart and answered it, so they could totally destroy the enemy. Joshua didn’t ask for the right thing, and God could have said, “he doesn’t even know it’s the earth that needs to stand still, so I’m not going to do it!” But instead He answered the desire of Joshua’s heart and honor his trust in Him, because God promised they would destroy them.
Sometimes I think we get so much into the semantics of things, and forget to trust God fully and think it’s all about us instead. When we believe what says and where He tells us to go and what to do in spite of what we see and hear, He rewards us with His answer to our prayers. Oh that our desire would to be like Joshua, wholly trusting in Jesus and all He has accomplished for us.
