So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything to the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31 GW
My hope is in God, was the motto of Arthur Guiness the creator of Guiness Beer. Now some might find it strange that a master brewer would have a relationship with God. But the story of Arthur Guiness and his legacy shows that God will use anything and will use anyone who is willing to follow where He leads and allows themselves to be used for His honor and glory.
Arthur was born and raised in County Kildare Ireland in 1725. In 1752 at the age of 27 upon receiving an inheritance from his Godfather, equivalent to then 4 years wages, he invested in a small brewy that made ale. Then in 1759 he decided he wanted to move to the Capitol in Dublin. There he found a brewery on 4 acres of land that was in disrepair. Believing he was led to Dublin to start another brewry, he signed an unbelievable 9,000 year lease! Which by the way still hangs in the brewry.
In 1761 he married Olivia Whitmore, with whom he had 21 children! unfortuneatly only 10 of them survived to adulthood. All who survived became successful in the various professions they chose and were assests to the societies in which they lived. At the time of his death in 1803, at the age of 78, he left 3 of his sons running the brewry and they were producing over 809,000 gallons of beer in a year’s time.
The name, production and legacy of Guiness lives on some 269 years after it began. In the days ahead we will look at this life that left such an impact and what was his focus in life. It makes us want to consider, what kind of impact and legacy can we have on our communities.
