Come on now, let’s walk and talk; let’s work this out. . . Isaiah 1:18
We are now officially more than half way through 2020, yet in many ways it feels like we’re going through in some sort of slow motion. Nothing is like it was before, first the virus, then the economy, the unjust, insidious murder of a black man by a policeman. Protests both peaceful and violent, destruction of property, more murders and some innocent children. We watch, wondering and praying when will it end? But hope was seen and heard at the funeral of Civil Rights Leaders John Lewis, who was intrumental in helping our nation wake up and begin adressing the issue of racial inequality through the wisdom of today’s verse; through reason, talking, listening and respecting one another.
This beneficial thought was further stated at his funeral when former President George W. Bush said of him, “John and I had our disagreements, of course. But in the America John Lewis fought for and in the America I believe in, differences of opinion are inevitable elements and evidence of democracy in action.” For over 244 years we have found a way, even in other times of crisis and chaos to sit down, and talk our differences out and in so doing found we have more in common than we thought and live in peace.
Let’s pray for the spirits of division, divisiveness, anger and strife to be dispelled at their roots, so that we can see and learn as former President Reagan so often said, “We have no enemies only opponents” and then live in a nation where there is libery and justice for all.
