No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. Rom. 8:27
How many of us has quoted this verse that we learned in Sunday School or VBS as kids, over and over again. But do we truly have an understanding of what it is truly saying? I always wondered how we could possibly be “more than” a conqueror. Then I thought that since with God nothing is impossible and He can do anything, and nothing is too hard for Him, I believed it was possible. But then as I became an adult and had to deal with adult issues, I still believed it was possible, but I sure wasn’t experiencing it. So what gives!? And since I knew enough to know it wasn’t on God’s end, it had to be on mine. And it was all because I never knew the meaning of the Greek word for “more than conquerors”.
Hupernikao- to overpower in victory; to be abundantly victorious, prevail mightily, vanquish beyond. It’s not just a matter of conquering, remaining in the victory, to never give back what has been conquered, ever! Human victories come and go, we gain and lose ground continuously. But the victory of Jesus was a once and done deal. He conquered hell, death and the grave never to give back any ground. Once we accept Jesus as our Savior and Lord as 1 John 4:17 put it, as He is, so are we in this world. 1 Cor. 15:57 says, But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Stop fighting for victory and stand in it. The way we can do this is when we know how much He loves us.
That love helps us follow His leading even when we don’t understand. In it we can know eventually things will work out for our good and benefit as we wait on His timing and provision. It’s a love that our human minds can’t comprehend because He loves us even when we’re unlovable. It’s the love that led Him to the whipping post and cross so that we could experience a love no other person could ever show us, to take us from a place of defeat and destruction to victory and overcoming life.
