Palm Sunday April, 13 Look, Here Comes Your King
“Tell the people of Jerusalem,
‘Look, your King is coming to you.
He is humble, riding on a donkey—
riding on a donkey’s colt.’ Matthew 21:5 (Isa. 62:11; Zech 9:9)
Jerusalem was filled with people who were celebrating Passover. There was excitement everywhere you looked. But the excitement hit a fever pitch as Jesus entered riding on a donkey. Jesus had become quite well known by this time because of performing miracles and sparing with the religious leaders, so the crowd of those following Him was growing.
Now, He was riding into the City of David on a donkey with people waving palm branches and laying their coats on the ground for the donkey to walk on to shouts of praise and adoration fit for a king. And when they referred to Him as the King of Israel this added fuel to an already lit fire with the religious leaders.
However it would soon become evident that He wasn’t the kind of king they wanted. Instead of overturning the Roman rule, and delivering them from its iron fist, He came to serve with love, grace and peace and deliver them from spiritual bondage. At this point none of His disciples or followers understood all the things Jesus had said to prepare them for what was about to take place. But all He spoke and taught had been planted in their hearts and later they would not only remember but understand.
Scripture Reading: Matthew 21:1-11; Mark 11:1-11; Luke 19:28-44; John 12:12-19
Something to consider: After 31/2 years of ministry no one truly understood Jesus, who He was, why He was here, and what He was trying to teach them, not even those closest to Him. Why not take this week to spend time with Jesus and deepen your relationship with Him as you walk the road to resurrection with Him.
